Sustainability | Locust Grove Farm Co
The high cost of beauty on our planet.
Reports show that in 2019 in the United States alone, almost 7.9 billion units of plastic were created just for beauty and personal care products. Business is booming in all things beauty and that number is rising. The global cosmetics industry generated 341 billion dollars in 2020 and is expected to exceed 550 billion in the next 6 years. I don't have actual figures on how much of that is packaged in plastic, but one look in the beauty aisle at Target, I think we can safely estimate it's well over 95%.
In today's world, sustainability has become a crucial aspect of every industry, including the beauty industry. As consumers become more aware of the environmental impact of their choices, they are seeking out products and brands that prioritize sustainability. At Locust Grove Farm Co, we understand the significance of reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable recycling in the beauty industry.
Plastic waste is a major concern globally, with millions of tons of plastic ending up in landfills, waterways and oceans each year. However, we believe that it is our responsibility to take action and find innovative solutions to reduce plastic waste. Studies show that only 9% of manufactured plastic is actually recycled. That 9% can only be reprocessed a limited number of times before it loses quality and no longer can be recycled.
We are committed to sustainability through the use of truly recyclable packaging, compostable packaging, or simply skipping the package all together when we can. We utilize paper, glass and aluminum, as all are easily recyclable. Aluminum and glass do not lose quality when recycled and can be recycled indefinably! Shipments come in post-consumer recycled boxes. We use upcycled paper padding, compostable cornstarch packing peanuts and paper tape, making the whole package recyclable.
To date, we estimate we have saved well over 50,000 plastic bottles from entering the landfill as a result of creating a multitude of plastic free swaps.
The beauty industry has a significant role to play in promoting sustainability, and we are proud to be part of this movement. Everywhere I look I'm seeing more plastic free options, even at major retailers. We vote with our dollars and if we actively seek out other plastic free options in our daily lives, companies will be more inclined to follow suit.
Another way we care for you and the planet is through our carefully selected ingredients. We opt for natural and organic options whenever possible. By using earth conscious and sustainable ingredients, we not only protect the environment but also provide our customers with high-quality products that are not only gentle and safe, but also effective.
At Locust Grove Farm Co, we believe that sustainability is not just a trend but a necessity. By reducing plastic waste, promoting recycling, and offering refill options, we are taking steps towards a more sustainable future.
